The Mekong Delta is a region of south-western Vietnam, covering approximately 15,000 square miles (38,850 square kilometres), where the Mekong Rivers splits into distributaries as it approaches the South China Sea. The beautiful region is regarded as a biological treasure trove, where 10,000 new species have been discovered. The Delta area is thought to have been lived in since prehistory, providing inhabitants with rich agricultural land and plentiful fishing.
